HMS Victorian was an armed merchant cruiser that spent the war protecting North Atlantic convoys On 6th November, 1914 she was off Las Palmas in the Canary Islands in pursuit an Italian vessel, the "Principe di Udine” with about 50 German and Austrians aboard, when Horace Horscroft fell overboard from the starboard side No 3 gun. The ship stopped engines and reversed, then lowered away both sea boats and three after boats but his body was not recovered.
